Twitter will fully reopen its offices and bring back business travel from March 15, according to a Publish written by CEO Parag Agrawal. In its memo (see full text below), Agrawal reiterates the policy put in place by former Twitter executive Jack Dorsey, saying employees will be allowed to work full-time remotely if that’s what they’re with. they are comfortable.
While Agrawal says he wants Twitter employees to work where they “feel most productive and creative” and that the company is committed to “really flexible working,” his statement relies heavily on the benefits of office work. He mentions how difficult distributed work is while saying that “office visits, team meetings, and events bring this culture to life in such a powerful way.”
This implies that Twitter’s remote working culture will not be quite the same as that of a company like Dropbox, which announced in 2020 that it was going “virtual first”. For Dropbox, that means remote working is the default and offices are more like coworking spaces where employees can choose to have meetings rather than individual workplaces.
Although Twitter seems to express some preference in its messaging, its policies are still more flexible than some other tech companies have announced. Amazon, for example, leaves work-from-home policy decisions for its corporate employees to individual teams rather than individual employees. Google and Microsoft have announced that they will test hybrid policies where employees come into the office on some days, but not all.

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, but given the improving state of the pandemic, we’ve made an important decision that I wanted to share because it affects us all. It has been almost two years since we closed our offices and travel, and I am delighted to report that we are ready to fully open business travel and all of our offices worldwide! Business travel is back now and office openings will begin March 15. Our culture is electric and palpable. Office tours, team meetings, and events bring this culture to life in such a powerful way, and I can’t wait to see it all happen.
Our top priority since the start of the pandemic has been to keep you all safe and that will continue. But we are now at a stage where you live your life, adapt to local health guidelines and decide what is best for you. Likewise, decisions about where you work, whether you feel safe traveling on business and which events you attend, should be yours.
As we reopen, our approach remains the same. Where you will feel most productive and creative is where you will work and that includes working from home full-time forever. Office every day? It also works. A few days at the office, a few days at home? Sure. That’s actually how most of you feel. This brings me to the next point…
In 2020, we quickly adapted to virtual work with resilience and agility, but almost all of us were working from home. Distributed work will be much, much more difficult. Anyone who has joined a meeting remotely while others are in a conference room knows this pain. There will be many challenges in the coming months, and we will have to be proactive, intentional, learn and adapt. We are in the same boat and we each play a part in the open, inclusive and productive culture that we want to create.
