The Orlando Pirates have provided an update on their players and technical staff ahead of the new 2021-22 DStv Premiership season.
According to administrative agent Floyd Mbele, the hackers worked tirelessly to finalize their team before the start of the new campaign.
He added that the tech team will reduce the number of players to a manageable number ahead of the new campaign as this is the time of year when “old contracts end and new ones begin”.
“We met the technical team last week and they asked for time to assess all players, including those returning from loan, before they could present their recommendations,” Mbele said on his club’s official website.
“As for players whose contracts have expired, contract negotiations are still ongoing,” Mbele revealed. “We are in talks with their respective representatives in advance and will make the necessary announcements in due course.”
Mbele also confirmed that the team’s first team and coaching staff returned to the club last week for Covid-19 tests and some initial fitness assessments, but revealed that pre-training training -season officially started on Monday July 5.
“Pre-season training starts today, but the players and technical staff returned last week. As a club it is important that before any resumption of training we have to make sure that the necessary medical tests are carried out, “he added.
“Covid testing has become the norm. All of our players and staff had to undergo testing. Obviously, this is not once, because we are required, according to the return-to-play protocols of the leagues, to constantly test and take the necessary precautions. “
