Fully Remote Businesses Are Hiring – 4 Ways To Make Your Application Stand Out

FlexJobs, a job board that focuses on remote work, homework and flexible employment opportunities, recently posted a list of 50 companies that allow 100% of their employees to work remotely 100% of the time. The companies spanned various industries including technology, financial services, health and wellness, etc. Recent job postings went well beyond engineering, including marketing, operations, finance, legal, HR, and even administrative roles.

If your goal is to land a job entirely remotely, you don’t have to focus solely on tech companies or tech roles. Whatever industry or function you are targeting, you will need to show that you can get results by working remotely. Best practices for the CV may still leave him too focused on working in person. Here are four ways to specifically tailor your job application for remote work:

1 – Highlight the remote work experience (or similar)

A strong CV, cover letter and online profile are tailored to how you describe your skills, expertise and experience. Ideally, you adapt your marketing to a sector, a role, level – as well as the working environment. The work environment includes start-ups and established businesses, large and small, as well as in person or remotely.

If you’ve worked remotely in the past, include it in job descriptions on your resume or put the phrase “remote” where geography would go. In the cover letter, where you have the choice of which examples to highlight, select the periods of remote work and detail how you approached the remote work. If you haven’t worked remotely but worked in teams where others were remotely, highlight how you collaborate virtually.

2 – Focus on tangible results and skills

In a remote working environment, your manager cannot see you working, so they can only judge you on the basis of your results. So your application should be fraught with tangible results – for example, specific results you have achieved for former employers, relevant skills that can easily be verified with work samples. A portfolio or website that showcases past projects is an effective way to share this information. You can include relevant links in your CV and online profile. Certifications and licenses are additional ways to demonstrate a level of expertise.

3 – Demonstrate a genuine interest in the work – not just in the working arrangements

Along with letting the potential employer know that you can do the job, you also want them to know you want to do the job. You don’t want the company of your dreams to think you are applying just because you want to work from home. You are benefiting from the WFH arrangement, and you want your inquiry to focus on what benefits your potential employer.

Your cover letter and other correspondence with the company should include the specific reasons why you are interested in the position, the company as a whole and the industry in general. Share how you got involved in this type of work. Highlight specific elements of the business that appeal to you – for example, mission, products, customers, history, founder’s story, etc. If there are industry trends or specific challenges that pique your interest even more, this is another way to show that you are involved and up to date.

4 – Be responsive

The way you perform your job search is an indication of how well you are going to do your job. Respond quickly to calls and emails. Be flexible to plan with. Be easy with technology.

If it is difficult to contact you now when you are supposed to want the job and are doing your best, it will be more difficult to reach you when you already have the job. If you find it difficult to organize your schedule now, you might find remote work difficult. If you are not comfortable with virtual communication platforms for maintenance purposes, you will not be comfortable working with them on a daily basis.

Remote work exists – tailor your job search to find it

The FlexJobs list is only a resource for identifying remote jobs. LinkedIn allows you to filter remote arrangements in its Jobs section. Your own network is always the most direct route to job leads, so be sure to let your contacts outside your home city know that you are available for remote work. That said, once you hear about avenues for remote working, don’t assume that the application you sent out before will appeal to companies that specifically hire remote workers. Use the four tips above to refine your approach.
