Employees Never Want to Give Up Remote Work, Says New Nitro Productivity Report

INVITED RESEARCH: Nitro Software, a global document productivity software company accelerating digital transformation in organizations around the world, today released its Productivity 2022 Report, which explores how the pandemic has transformed productivity, workflows work and digital initiatives, as well as the trends and technologies that are shaping working in 2022 and beyond.

The report builds on the findings of the Nitro Productivity Report 2020, which was released in late 2019, and explores how work habits have changed before the pandemic over the past year and a half. Nitro partnered with Qualtrics in April 2021 to survey 600 full-time and part-time knowledge workers and 140 business leaders in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia on the main challenges faced during the pandemic, changing workflows and digital needs.

Research shows that while there is some desire to return to the office, most employees want to continue working from home to some extent and expect employers to provide remote work options after the pandemic . According to the report, 46% of knowledge workers plan to work remotely more frequently even after the pandemic is over, and 71% feel extremely or very prepared to work from home in the long term.

“Working remotely for an extended period of time has given employees more control over their workdays and more flexibility over their lives than ever before,” said Gina O’Reilly, COO of Nitro.

Working from home not only offered more flexibility during the pandemic, but also reduced stress levels and improved overall employee happiness. The Nitro report found that in 2020 the number of workers feeling moderately stressed has decreased by 12% and job satisfaction has increased by 6%. In addition, those who reported no stress increased by 66%. And this despite the amount of work that now takes place outside the traditional 6:00 am to 6:00 pm window, doubling to 20%.

Additional highlights from the report include several conclusions regarding the evolution of the way we work and the importance of having access to the most appropriate tools and solutions to be as productive and efficient as possible:

• Remote work paved the way for dematerialization. At the start of 2020, global printing fell by 52% and this trend continued until 2021. 50% of those surveyed say they have used less physical documents and paper processes since the start of the pandemic.

• Documentary processes are still inefficient in 2021. 44% of respondents say they collaborate more on documents since the onset of COVID-19. However, 83% say the way their company handled documents has not improved significantly during the pandemic.

• Digital transformation plans have accelerated. 86% of business leaders say COVID-19 has accelerated the need for digital transformation. The digital initiatives projects are now expected to take place over the next two years.

• IT budgets are increasing. Eight in 10 business leaders say IT budgets have increased by 10-14% from 2020, and two in 10 say they have increased by more than 25%.

• Digital document workflows are more important than ever. More workers are now using an electronic signature solution than they were before the pandemic in 2019, which was only 12% then. And nearly half of workers say they would be a little or a lot more productive with an electronic signature or PDF solution.
