CWS calls on President Duterte to tackle the plight of workers in his last year in office – Manila Bulletin

The People-Workers Solidarity Church (CWS) called on President Duterte to do everything possible to do better during his last year in office.

CWS launched the appeal saddened by the miserable situation of workers in the country.

In a statement, the group particularly deplored that President Duterte’s campaign promise to end the practice of “contractualization” or “endo” and improve working conditions for all has not been kept.

He said President Duterte had also promised free distribution of land, but since taking office in 2016, “not only has he failed to implement a real land reform program, but he has also cracked down on those who dared to fight for it “.

The group also marked the killings of industrial workers, farm workers and fishermen as well as violations of labor rights.

“President Duterte’s campaign slogan promised the Filipino people that ‘change is coming.’ Five years would have been more than enough to keep that promise. However, the promised change never happened. With one more year in power, can we still expect fundamental changes, especially now that the 2022 election is looming? Said CWS President Bishop Gerardo Alminaza.

“The CWS calls on President Duterte to deal with the plight of the workers, to let justice prevail and to truly serve the interests of the Filipino workers,” he added.

“Perhaps he can still redeem himself if he takes up our challenge to put the dignity of human work at the center of his efforts during his final year as President; and to have a passion for the true, the just and the good, ”said Alminaza.

June 30, 2021 marked President Duterte’s five years.
