Editor’s Note: This is the first in a monthly series of campus updates on CU Boulder’s efforts to build a common approach to student-centered teaching and learning. This series will continue throughout the academic year.

Chancellor instructs management team to accelerate student success efforts

Chancellor Philip DiStefano, along with Provost Russell Moore and COO Patrick O’Rourke, tasked a team of leaders from across the university to be part of the Leadership for Success Implementation Team. undergraduate students (BUS-LIT) from Buff to support undergraduate student success efforts.

The team, which will be led by Katherine Eggert, Senior Vice-President, Academic Planning and Assessment; Akirah Bradley-Armstrong, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; Jon Leslie, Senior Associate Vice-Chancellor and Director of Communications; and Marin Stanek, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer, will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students, as well as academic leadership of colleges and schools, shared governance organizations and other student-oriented administrative units to streamline processes and direct resources more effectively to student success.

“I am extremely grateful to our dedicated staff and faculty who work tirelessly to help our undergraduate students progress toward graduation and gain a sense of belonging on campus,” said DiStefano. “By empowering this team of leaders, I am confident that we can create a more efficient and effective process for student success. “

While there are already a variety of programs designed around student success, these programs – which include on-campus programs to increase retention, help students graduate in a timely manner, and create a sense of belonging. – lack of campus-wide coordination and resource visibility and support.

The BUS-LIT, specified in the Chancellor’s recent mandate, will determine a method to assess the effectiveness of current and planned programs and bring them to the attention of leaders. BUS-LIT will act in tandem with transversal working groups which will be responsible for identifying and analyzing student success programs on campus.

Common Curriculum Planning Committee

Marshal Russell Moore recently appointed members of the Joint Curriculum Planning Committee to continue the groundwork laid last year by creating a common learning experience and a common set of learning outcomes for students of undergraduate of CU Boulder.

The development of a common curriculum for undergraduates was recommended in the Academic Futures (PDF) report and reinforced in the Higher Learning Commission’s re-accreditation exam (PDF). Last spring Eggert and Robert Shay, professor of musicology and former dean of the College of Music, co-led a campus-wide listening tour to develop a joint program involving more than 1,000 professors, staff and students. academic units, shared governance groups. , student groups and academic support organizations. Course alert process improvements

In its ongoing efforts to support student success, the Office of Undergraduate Education is introducing changes to the undergraduate course alert process this fall that will allow instructors greater flexibility to submit alerts based on their class schedule and more time for students to respond.

“These changes are a direct result of the important feedback we have received from instructors and faculty,” said Beth Myers, assistant vice-president of student success initiatives. “We now have the option of including four-week, five-week, eight-week and 10-week sessions that were not included in the past. “
