Center halts work from home for government employees and launches biometric system for office attendance

New Delhi: With the significant drop in coronavirus cases in the country, the Center on Thursday stopped working from home for government employees and resumed the biometric system for office presence. In issuing a desk memorandum on Wednesday, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said referring to the earlier desk memorandum dated January 31, 2022: “As the period of suspension of biometric attendance ended on 15.02 .2022, all officers, civil servants working in this department are required to mark their attendance in the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance Control System (AEBAS) effective from 16 February 2022.”Also Read – Moderna’s Specific Omicron Booster Should Be Ready By August

The latest order from the Department of Personnel and Training also stated that while marking their presence at AEBAS, all officers, managers will follow preventive measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). After the coronavirus began to spread in the third wave this year, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Claims and Pensions issued an instruction to all ministries and central departments to reduce office traffic by 50%. In the guidelines, officers and staff were told to ensure strict adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviors, such as frequent hand-washing, sanitizing, wearing a face mask, face covering and constant observation of social distancing.

Previously, pregnant employees and Divyang employees were exempted from attending offices while the physical presence of government officials below the level of undersecretary was limited to 50% of the actual workforce.

In the order, the remaining 50% of employees worked from home with the instruction that those working from home would remain available by telephone and other electronic means of communication at all times.
