Research Triangle Park – IBM CEO says going to IBM’s office will be much rarer as the world begins to emerge from the social distancing requirements of COVID-19.
In fact, IBM, which operates one of the world’s largest square footage campuses, has the potential to dramatically reduce the amount of office space.
That’s what IBM President and CEO Arvind Krishna says.
IBM also owns Raleigh-based Red Hat, which occupies a major office tower in the heart of the capital’s downtown area.
About 10% of IBM employees have returned to their jobs, according to Krishna.
Krishna told Bloomberg News that 80% of IBM employees “will spend at least three days a week, maybe eight to ten hours, but at least part of those three days in the office.” ..
In other words, as Bloomberg explained, this is a hybrid working model.
It’s not just IBM. Bloomberg cites a Zoom Video Communications survey that found about 65% of companies considering a “flexible remote working model”.
Krishna said the global tech giants could close offices due to changing working conditions. It maintains approximately 70 million square feet of space around the world.
He said more than half of the current space will likely be kept. Bloomberg quoted Krishna, adding that the other spaces have been “restructured to facilitate collaboration.”
Last May, IBM released a “playbook” to its employees on the intranet that they intended to follow when they started opening the door.
The guidelines include scheduling a phased reinstatement list, enhanced testing, contact tracing, treatment, physical office changes, and readiness checks. There is also a section on how “Wave 2” of COVID-19 will affect the planning and progress of your return to work.
“We can’t predict when IBM’s employees in Raleigh will return to work, but we’re working hard,” said Zacklow, Immersion Manager at IBM.
