5 cloud productivity apps for office workers

Working from home comes with its own set of challenges. Here are five web apps designed to help you get the job done, whether it’s a secure transfer. files on the Internet, check for updates to a document, collaborate with colleagues to create a report, transcribe text, or open unidentifiable file formats without installing additional software
Bublup.com
This website provides you a simple and secure way to transfer files. When you sign up for a free account, you get up to 15 GB of space for your file transfers. You will earn an additional 1 GB for life every time a friend or colleague joins the service with your referral.
To transfer, simply upload your document, video or any other digital format to a Bublup folder. Then click on the “•••” menu in the upper right corner of the file you downloaded and select “copy shareable link”.
Subsequently, you can send the link by e-mail, SMS, social networks or any other means of sharing information. The website even allows you to share multiple files at once.
If needed, you can upgrade to 1TB of storage and transfer files up to 50GB with Bublup Premium.
Diffchecker.com
Suppose, for example, that you need to work with multiple versions of a text file that has been exchanged between team members.
With Diff Checker, you can copy and paste the text of these files – or even upload them – to the site for a list of the differences between the two.
Diff Checker comes with a myriad of functions including “compare and merge” which allows you to create an updated document with all the additions.
It also supports comparison between images, PDFs and Excel worksheets.
Besides the web application, you also get paid desktop software which contains additional features such as comparing two folders on your computer; it allows you to export to PDF, highlights text syntax and even works offline for faster results and greater privacy.
Etherpad.org
Etherpad is an open source online editor that gives you real-time collaborative editing. With this tool, you don’t need to send a text file to your colleagues and collaborators. Just set up a pad and share the link.
Etherpad allows multiple people to edit documents collaboratively, much like a live multiplayer editor that runs in your browser.
You can use it to write articles, press releases, to-do lists and more with friends, classmates or colleagues, all working on the same document at the same time. All instances provide access to all data and support import / export to many major data formats.
Etherpad is available for download for the Windows, Mac OS and Linux, along with a detailed setup guide on how to set it up for your organization or group.
Alternatively, you can head to the “List of Public Instances” on the home page of publicly hosted Etherpads which you can use without any configuration.
Now, if Etherpad’s built-in feature set is not enough for you, there are almost 300 plugins that allow you to customize your instance to suit your needs.
Speechnotes.co
Speech Notes is a web application that works in Google Chromium the browser. When you start up, you need to give the app access to your microphone and select your preferred language. These could include Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Urdu. After that you can start dictating and the speech notes will transcribe it for you. You also get a sidebar that lists all the voice commands you would need for your punctuation.
When you’re done, you can choose to make manual corrections to your transcript, and you also get a “speaker” icon through which you can play your entire text read. All of your dictated text can then be copied and pasted into any word processor. You can also choose to download it directly to your Google Drive or download it in TXT or DOC format.
Speech Notes is great for taking notes and for those times when you have ideas and need a tool to quickly incorporate your thoughts into a document.
Rollmyfile.com
It is almost impossible – and not practical either – to install software for every existing file format. But sometimes, you might receive a file that you might not recognize, or even have the program on your PC to open it.
Enter Roll My File: Simply upload the unrecognizable file to the website, and it will automatically launch an app through its rollApp cloud service and upload your file.
Roll My File can open over 500 file formats, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, eBooks, compressed archives, charts, diagrams, and even publishing systems.
When you are done working with your file and close the application, the file is deleted from the server without leaving a trace.
If Roll My File can’t open a certain format, their team is notified and then works on adding an application that works with that type of file, so support for new formats is constantly added.
